When I am Dead, My Dearest (video)

When I am dead, my dearest,
Sing no sad songs for me;
Plant thou no roses at my head,
Nor shady cypress tree:
Be the green grass above me
With showers and dewdrops wet;
And if thou wilt, remember,
And if thou wilt, forget.

I shall not see the shadows,
I shall not feel the rain;
I shall not hear the nightingale
Sing on, as if in pain:
And dreaming through the twilight
That doth not rise nor set,
Haply I may remember,
And haply may forget.

Only Time/Up-hill

Who can say where the road goes
where the day flows, only time

Does the road wind up-hill all the way?
Yes, to the very end'

and who can say if your love grows
as your heart shows, only time

Will the day's journey take the whole long day?
From morn to night, my friend.

who can say why your heart sighs
as your love flies, only time

But is there for the night a resting-place?
A roof for when the slow dark hours begin.

and who can say why your heart cries
when your love lies, only time

May not the darkness hide it from my face?
You cannot miss that inn.

who can say when the roads meet
that the might be, in your heart

Shall I find comfort, travel-sore and weak?
Of labour you shall find the sum.

and who can say when the days sleeps
if the night keeps, all your heart

Will there be beds for me and all who seek?
Yea, beds for all who come.

night keeps, all your heart

who can say if your love grows
as your heart shows only time

and who can say where the road blows
where the day flows only time

who knows, only time..
who knows, only time

The song playing is "Only Time" by Enya, and I used it to compare/contrast with the poem "Up-hill" by Christina Rossetti.

These works seem to both be questioning where life leads us, the paths we are on and will take, and where we will go. Love, broken hearts and journeys we willa all persue show in these pieces. Also the big wondering question on everyones mind seems to be what happens to us when we die, and is that really the end? Does any body really know, because those that have gone before us cannot share that information which is why it is a mystery.

On the other hand, Rossetti poem is more based on death, that at the end of the road there is death and seems to say that life isn't necessarily easy but if people work hard, there will be a spot for everyone (in heaven). Enya's song does not necessarily reflect that, her song more gives off the idea that no one really does know and it is a mystery, we should live what we can and learn from it. Only time knows.
